I decided to describe Jamie's Italian in Buda Castle because that was the last place where I had lunch outside my home before the covid lockdown started.
Let me start with the location of the restaurant: it's in the famous Buda Castle near the most popular landmarks like Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion.
Atmosphere: I reckon that the restaurant is very popular with foreign tourists it was packed with people even at the end of February. I guess we very lucky to get a table without reservation. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere, I liked the rustic vibe of the interior. The toilets were impeccably clean.
Menu: The restaurant specialises in Italian food, or rather Brit-Italian food as the owner of the chain is British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The menu is varied: it offers 'quick nibbles' like garlic bread, giant green olives or rosemary focaccia, antipasti (or starters) like flash-fried prawns and soups, salads, different kinds of pasta and pizza, main courses like sirloin steak or fish stew. Of course they offer a wide variety of desserts and drinks. I highly recommend their non-alcoholic cocktails and homemade lemonade.
Service: Although the restaurant was full and we could hardly see a free table, the service was quite fast and friendly.
Prices: For the overall experience, the food and the service, the 17,000 HUFcost of our lunch for three felt reasonable. There are no big surprises, don't expect Michelin-star cooking. If you like the recipes of the British Tv chef it is worth a try. Cookbooks and kitchen utensils are available for sale at the gift shop.
From the King James translation of Matthew 7:7: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." Something can be found if it is looked for.
It is a Biblical quote, thus the 'old-fashioned' "ye (you) shall ..."
Exercises:
1: Find an example of the Present Perfect Continuous:
2: Find an example of the Future Continuous:
3: Watch it burn vs. Watch it burning
Is there any difference?
4: What's the English for:
mostanában rosszul alszom:
nem vagyok olyan öreg:
elsüllyeszteni a folyóba:
fogd a pénzt és nézd, ahogyan ég:
Keress és találsz!:
5. If you wanted to tattoo a line from the song on your arm, which line would you pick?
We use the Present Perfect Continuous when we talk about an action (quite a long action) that began in the past and RECENTLY stopped or JUST stopped. We can still see some signs or side effects that indicate that the action stopped a short time ago.
Are you ready to pick up where we left off (folytatni, ahol abbahagytuk)?
Last week we focused on CONDITIONALS and WOULD YOU RATHER questions. We chatted about quite many topics including making difficult choices in life, phobias, colours and so on.
Do you remember?
0 Conditional: If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils. (it's a fact, always true.)
1st Conditional: If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight. (it describes a particular situation, present ----) future)
2nd Conditional: If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house. (Probably WILL NOT happen)
I also asked you to practise Conditionals with the help of these online tests, didn't I? Why don't we have a look together? As far as I remember there were some questions where you had to use the third conditional or other grammar points that we have not discussed yet. Should you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Let's change the subject and do a listening comprehension exercise related to a text in your Total English Book ( page 50)
Have you seen Catch Me If You Can? It's a biographical crime film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. The main character is a conman, who stole millions of dollars before he turned 21. He posed as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer although he never graduated from college.
The following listening comprehension exercise is based on the movie's trailer.
HW: reading and listening, Total English pages 50-51 (a színes tankönyvi részben ez a két teljes oldal szőröstül-bőröstül)
A következő grammar point a QUESTION TAGS lesz.
Can't meet face-to-face because of this damned coronavirus? The lockdown (a situation in which people are not allowed to enter or leave a building or area freely because of an emergency) offers a great opportunity to practise essay writing. Do you know this Latin proverb? Verba volant, scripta manent- = Spoken words fly away, written words remain (A szó elszáll az írás megmarad)
Writing tasks give us an opportunity to highlight and correct some of your typical mistakes.
In addition to this, writing skills are becoming more important as messaging and all sorts of written communication are becoming more widespread.
Let's get down to work, shall we?
Today's lesson is about essay writing, more precisely about "For and against essays" - they are one type of argumentative essays (érvelő esszé) in which you discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a specific topic - fpr example
Living in a City
First, we talked about our homes and the best and worst things about our houses and flats. (Total English pages 35-41). We also talked about living in the city vs living in the country. We saw, that everything has ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES or in other words: PROS and CONS. Talking and writing about advantages and disadvantages is a popular and frequently used topic at B2 level exams.
If we want to practise essay witing, the first step is: collecting ideas to use in the essay.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a city?
+easier to find work, there is a choice of public transport, there are interesting things to do and see
- expensive, public transport is crowde, you can feel lonely
Then, we have to decide whether YOU are for or against CITY LIFE and DRAW A CONCLUSION.
Next, you have to choose words that will help you make your point:
on the plus side, what is more, in conclusion.
The essay I gave you last Wednesday is a good example of a well-written, conscise essay.
Have you read it?
TASK:
Some words are underlined in the text (LIVING IN THE CITY). Please replace the underlined words with one of the following:
in spite of
another point is that
all things considered
to sum up
one disadvantage is that
morover
pros and cons
one advantage is that
moreover
pros and cons
one advantage is that
for instance
in my opinion
especially
finally
------------Did you do it?--------------------------------------------------
Other useful expressions:
To list points: In the first place, To begin with, First of all, Secondly, Thirdly, Finally
To add more points: Furthermore, What is more, In addition to this, Moreover, Besides, Not to mention the fact that
To list advantages: The main advantage of, An additional advantage is that, It is believed that
To list disadvantages: The main disadvantage is that ...
An additional disadvantage is that ...
To show contrast: On the other hand, However, In spite of, While, Despite, Although, Nevertheless
To introduce examples: For example, for instance, As a result
Conclusion:To sum up, To conclude, All in all, All things considered, In conclusion
DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE the following words properly: in spite of, despite, although
https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/intermediate-to-upper-intermediate/in-spite-of-despite-although-even-though-and-though (Scroll down for test)
The easiest explanation:
We went for a walk in spite of the rain.=We went for a walk despite the rain.
(Elmentünk sétálni az eső ellenére)
Although: Although it rained, we went out for a walk.
(Bár esett, elmentünk sétálni)
After despite/in spite of we usually use a noun or -ing verb
in spite of the hot weather, in spite of being tired
After although we usually use subject+verb (WHO did WHAT)
Although he worked hard, he never had enough money.
(Bár keményen dolgozott, sosem volt pénze)
Now you go ahead and find a topic that you would like to write or talk about:
My suggestions:
online learning (pros and cons)
living in the country
watching television
extreme sports
working from home
vegetarianism
death penalty
zoos
social media
daylight saving time
learning languages
travelling by train
travelling by car
globalisation
online shopping
Maybe you can pick one or more topics and collect ideas, then write the essay. You do not like these tropics?
