Hi you guys,

Can't meet face-to-face because of this damned coronavirus? The lockdown (a situation in which people are not allowed to enter or leave a building or area freely because of an emergency) offers a great opportunity to practise essay writing. Do you know this Latin proverb? Verba volant, scripta manent- = Spoken words fly away, written words remain (A szó elszáll az írás megmarad)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Writing tasks give us an opportunity to highlight and correct some of your typical mistakes.

In addition to this, writing skills are becoming more important as messaging and all sorts of written communication are becoming more widespread.

Képtalálatok a következőre: spoken words fly away

Let's get down to work, shall we?

Today's lesson is about essay writing, more precisely about "For and against essays" - they are one type of argumentative essays (érvelő esszé) in which you discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a specific topic - fpr example

Living in a City

First, we talked about our homes and the best and worst things about our houses and flats. (Total English pages 35-41). We also talked about living in the city vs living in the country. We saw, that everything has ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES or in other words: PROS and CONS. Talking and writing about advantages and disadvantages is a popular and frequently used topic at B2 level exams.

If we want to practise essay witing, the first step is: collecting ideas to use in the essay.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in a city?

+easier to find work, there is a choice of public transport, there are interesting things to do and see

- expensive, public transport is crowde, you can feel lonely

Then, we have to decide whether YOU are for or against CITY LIFE and DRAW A CONCLUSION.

Next, you have to choose words that will help you make your point:

on the plus side, what is more, in conclusion.

The essay I gave you last Wednesday is a good example of a well-written, conscise essay.

Have you read it?

TASK:

Some words are underlined in the text (LIVING IN THE CITY). Please replace the underlined words with one of the following:

in spite of

another point is that

all things considered

to sum up

one disadvantage is that

morover

pros and cons

one advantage is that

moreover

pros and cons

one advantage is that

for instance

in my opinion

especially

finally

------------Did you do it?--------------------------------------------------

Other useful expressions:

To list points: In the first place, To begin with, First of all, Secondly, Thirdly, Finally

To add more points: Furthermore, What is more, In addition to this, Moreover, Besides, Not to mention the fact that

To list advantages: The main advantage of, An additional advantage is that, It is believed that

To list disadvantages: The main disadvantage is that ...

An additional disadvantage is that ...

To show contrast: On the other hand, However, In spite of, While, Despite, Although, Nevertheless

To introduce examples: For example, for instance, As a result

Conclusion: To sum up, To conclude, All in all, All things considered, In conclusion

Képtalálatok a következőre: in spite of

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE the following words properly: in spite of, despite, although

https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/intermediate-to-upper-intermediate/in-spite-of-despite-although-even-though-and-though (Scroll down for test)

The easiest explanation:

We went for a walk in spite of the rain.=We went for a walk despite the rain.

(Elmentünk sétálni az eső ellenére)

Although: Although it rained, we went out for a walk.

(Bár esett, elmentünk sétálni)

After despite/in spite of we usually use a noun or -ing verb

in spite of the hot weather, in spite of being tired

After although we usually use subject+verb (WHO did WHAT)

Although he worked hard, he never had enough money.

(Bár keményen dolgozott, sosem volt pénze)

Now you go ahead and  find a topic that you would like to write or talk about:

My suggestions:

online learning (pros and cons)

living in the country

watching television

extreme sports

working from home

vegetarianism

death penalty

zoos

social media

daylight saving time

learning languages

travelling by train

travelling by car

globalisation

online shopping

Maybe you can pick one or more topics and collect ideas, then write the essay. You do not like these tropics?

Any suggestions?
